Fielding a few questions
Reader CKW asked the following questions. Some of them I can answer, some I can’t. Anyone got any better info?
Do grab bags return?
I have seen no mention of grab bags in New Leaf. That’s not to say they aren’t in it, but from what I can tell they were in the Gamecube version for only one day in November and I haven’t gotten through the whole year, so they may be, but I kind of doubt it.
What is bamboo used for? and are there bugs only found on bamboo?
It’s the dead of winter and there aren’t many bugs out. Looking through the guidebook I haven’t seen any bugs that say 竹 (bamboo), so I don’t think there are bamboo only bugs. Bamboo is treated as a fruit. It’s a little weird because you don’t shake it like a fruit tree. Every few days you will see an X on the ground near it. When you dig it up it will be a bamboo shoot. You can eat it, plant it, or sell it.
How many money rocks can be found a day per playable player? can there be up to four gem stone rock?
I’m honestly not sure. I don’t hit the rocks every day and I’m not sure if each character gets their own or if there’s just one in town per day. There’s always just one gem stone rock. Sometimes the “money” rock will contain gemstones instead of bells. And I’m thinking there’s only one of those. I’ll try and check with other characters and get back to you.
Is it true that they lowered the rarity of fish and bugs?
I’m not quite sure what you mean by this. Do you mean that they appear more frequently? I haven’t had a problem catching rare fish and bugs. But I might have gotten lucky. I caught a coelacanth fairly quickly, but I’ve only gotten the one. Scallops are hard to catch…All the fish and bugs on the island are plentiful and there’s nothing that seems extremely rare.
did they make getting bells easier?
The addition of the island helps tremendously with money gathering. You gain access about a week after you start your town. Until then, there are the usual avenues of selling fruit, and shells etc. Selling fruit is much easier in New Leaf. You can stack your fruit into baskets containing 9 apiece so it doesn’t take nearly as long. Also you can grow “delicious” versions of your native fruit. If you take that delicious fruit and sell it in a town where it’s not native you get 3,000 bells apiece. And there are so many different types of fruit now! I made a new character today, shook a few trees and paid off her initial mortgage of 10,000 bells within 10 minutes.
On with my day
In an attempt to make nicey nice with my townies I went and talked to Lillian. She insisted I bring Iris over to her house so she could speak with her within one hour. Of course I would do anything for Lillian.
Before I could even tell Iris that Lillian wanted to see her she insisted I bring her a piece of fruit. So I gave her an apple and then off we went back to Lillian’s.
Lillian wanted to talk to Iris because she had a surprise present for her. Isn’t she thoughtful! She gave Iris a black denim jacket. I hope unibrow wears it proudly.
Museum Display Overhaul
I spent most of my morning taking out every fossil I had and figuring out what was a duplicate and what I still needed to be able to further my dino-mini collection. I was able to make two more minis with all of my fossils. None of them are duplicates. There are 20 dinosaurs you can turn into minis and I’ve made 10 of them. I have 2 out of 3 of most of the rest, so with a little luck and a lot of double checking it won’t be long before I complete my collection.
Here’s what my museum display room looks like so far. It’s a work in progress.
Redd’s Gallery
My favorite swindler was in town again. è¿·æŽ¢åµ (typo intended) Yumi was on the hunt for non-counterfeit art.

Meet Taiga

This is Taiga, Kasen’s third human resident. She’s a main character from Tora Dora (just like Ryuuji)
Conclusion
In addition to the dino-tidying I’ve been trying to redo my town paths into the cheery brick design I showed you the other day. Ryuuji finally has access to the QR scanner, so he’s doing most of the work laying them. Unfortunately due to the intricacy of the design I’m having to rework some of the paths and turn them at different points and shift them up or down by a square. It’s rather time consuming. I need a townie to request an “under construction” sign.
Oh speaking of townies requesting things (community projects). I meant to note that I spent an hour lying in bed reading the guide last night and found that the community projects that are suggested by your townies are based on their personalities and sex. So if there’s some community project that you absolutely must have like…the “globe jungle”—that colorful pipe thing that you see on the box—you’d have to have a “careless” (I don’t know how they translate the personality) male villager request it.
I wondered if they were just random. Turns out, only sort of.
This puts a wrinkle in letting certain townies move if there’s a chance they may suggest something that you want to place in town. *waves to Derry over in Wasabi village—who can suggest that globe jungle thing.*
